Just taking longer than I had hoped because I am covering some new ground in terms of method. #AMIDIANBORN ARMOR MOD MOD#It has been a long time since I did an armor set mod so I am trying to take everything I have learned over the last year and solve the problems I had with my samurai armor. The end result will be a completely original texture with a lot of hand painted details. I am not the most artistic person so I have to use reference images for templates and create the shape layers from that. It will take a bit of time to get the engraving portions looking like they are supposed to look. It will be mostly blackened and that allows me to use the environment map for the brass exclusively. Bare steel is rarely practical in any climate without some form of corrosion protection. I am very happy with the progress and hopefully I will have something to post later today.įor the metal I decided on a form of bluing instead of bare steel. I completely redid the neck armor and lacing because the original was based off an image I tried to mod into a depth map. I was amazed at how crisp the detail was and it makes me wonder why I had never thought of this before and is much easier than tedious hand painting. This also lets me control the specific portions of each layer for color and reflectance maps. Usually what you end up with is a normal map that looks like a wad of chewed gum. I am sure people have noticed that small details are hard to achieve by cheating and using images. By using gradient ranges of the grayscale height for each section based off a vector path or shape I can make highly detailed normal maps no matter the size. I am making custom shapes and vector paths for each portion of the engravings. Making a normal map from an image rarely achieves a good result so I thought about it for a bit and came up with a solution. I was not happy with the brass accoutrements so I started those from scratch. Not at home so I can’t post a picture just yet.
